https://www.facebook.com/hmp.grendon.77 beginning the prison experience: ​ the thought of going to prison for the first time is the stuff of nightmares and it can be a tough time indeed, but, in a bizarre way it can also be character building and is certainly a life changing experience. ​ i worked as a prison officer for a total of 24 years, as a counsellor and group therapist to high-risk male and female prisoners and as a drug and alcohol counsellor, before i decided to go self employed as a prison law consultant, until earlier this year (2018) ​ to be truthful if you can receive the ongoing support of those close to you, arm yourself with a couple of items that sustain positive memories of the outside world and you remain well informed, about the prison process, then you are on your way to being able to cope with the experience. ​ just remind yourself that prisons do not run consistently, and you will become swiftly aware of those in jail who are suffering injustice. if you learn to expect the unexpected and not to rely on the routine too much, you will suffer less. ​ being able to almost instantly rely on your own company, or that of your cell mate, which is another issue entirely, then you will survive many disappointments. ​ your life experience outside will be important to you, as you make your way through the system, but the life behind bars has a culture of its own (nick culture) that you will soon learn about from fellow prisoners. ​ despite the widespread negative comments, there are some prison officers (or screws, as they continue to be called) who will be approachable on the wings/landings and they can be friendly but cannot be termed your friend during your time inside. equally there will be officers who are unapproachable and may even attempt to make your life harder at times. the trick is to decide who they are and try to give them a wide berth, or at least do not rise to any bait they might offer. ​ after arrest: ​ after your arrest you may get remanded to jail or released on bail. remand means you are sent to prison before trial/conviction or acquittal. ​ bail means you will remain in the community, under strict conditions, to report to the police regularly during the lead up to trial. during your period on bail there will be some conditions imposed on you, such as house arrest, reporting to the police station each day, exclusion zones, maybe restricted access to certain friends/family. it will be an emotionally challenging time, with some sleepless nights, worrying about future employment, housing, family and finance. remand to custody: ​ if you are remanded into custody, then you will be taken from the dock down to the holding cells and transferred to whichever prison serves that court. you can phone the court before attending, to find out where you might be taken, but there might be a couple of options available and you could find yourself going anywhere, particularly if the receiving prison is on a lock-out, and not accepting any more in. ​ private companies run the court transfers and you may have seen the prison vans on your travels, traditionally known as the “sweat boxes”. from this point on you become a statistic and you will be given a number that will be unique to you for the rest of your sentence and in some instances (for those serving life) for the rest of your life. ​ go prepared: ​ i will include a list of items to pack in a bag, in a separate post. it is always wise to go to court well prepared. ​ if you can hand over responsibility for your financial affairs to your family or a close friend before trial, that would be useful, otherwise, you really should cancel standing orders, direct debits etc, rather than incur unnecessary costs and debt, if you are sent to prison. ​ you are responsible for cancelling any rental agreements on your car or property as soon as you know you will be convicted and sentenced, but certainly at the earliest opportunity when your sentence begins. ​ sentences are complex: ​ there are two main types of sentence, determinate (where you receive an edr. earliest date of release) and an indeterminate (normally for the most serious offences, with the earliest date that you can apply for release through the parole board. ped, parole eligibility date) ​ please remember that if you have been awarded a sentence, it does not mean you will spend all that time in jail and there may be a period when you are released into the community, under the supervision of the probation service. this is called the “licence period”. ​ role stripping: ​ on arrival at the prison, you will be taken to the processing area, here you will go through what is called the “role stripping” procedure, which means taking away the role you may have had in society and replacing it with a new one, as you begin prison life. the reception officer will let you know the basic rules to follow and let you know what you can keep, which is called “i p property” (property that is signed into your possession and you are responsible for) and “stored property” (which will remain in the prison store room, for the remainder of your sentence). ​ you will be able to make an “application” to have items in your possession at a later stage. however, the prison will give you a list of what you can and cannot have, which can vary from prison to prison. ​ during this processing you will be referred to by your surname, in most cases, be photographed and strip searched. ​ you will arrive in prison on the standard level, under the incentive and earned privileges iep scheme), which means you will have to wear prison issue clothing and will have the same rights as other prisoners, but you will be encouraged to reach the “enhanced” status, through good behaviour and complying with your prison “sentence plan”, which should be prepared in the first 6 months of your sentence, but rarely is! ​ first night: ​ you will then move from the prison reception unit, onto the “first night” unit, which is where you begin to find your way, with other prisoners and staff, from here, you will be approached by other prisoners who will be accessing you as much as you are assessing them. try to stay strong, not to show worry or anxiety, be friendly and from here on you will learn from others what is expected of you, in the long term. ​ prisons vary so much in their regimes, so it is impossible for anybody to tell you exactly what atmosphere you can expect. ​ you should be offered a single phone call to let family and friends know where and how you are, but sometimes you may have to wait until your phone numbers have been cleared by the administration office, which may take several days. ​ this is probably the most stressful period for most prisoners and their families. each prisoner is given a unique “pin number”, which contains all of the numbers you are allowed to call, you will be invited to fill in details of the numbers for the “pin clerk” on the day you arrive. ​ induction meetings: ​ over a two-week period, there is normally an “induction meeting” for all new comers to let you know what is expected and what will be available through sentence. ​ you will be assessed in reception and during your first night, to see if you have any psychological issues, whether you have drug and alcohol issues, liable to self-harm or if you tend to be violent for the first week you will be entitled top an rvo (reception visiting order), or, in some cases it is called a pvo (privileged visiting order) to send out to anybody who wishes to visit. but, please bear in mind that prison visiting procedures vary greatly, so make sure that you find out what the local procedures are. ​ remain well informed: ​ some prisons run very inefficiently, so,
